After all these years, after the film, (being released in the same format w/the substantial special features, minus the newly recorded commentary by Ms. Streisand. The film, in and of itself, is a cinematic masterpiece in storytelling, and of the telling, and subsistent, showing of the main protagonist breaking down his walls and finding his way through facing his demons. Streisand did a seamless job of bringing the book to love and pulled out astounding performances from not only Nolte, but Blyeth Danner (most effectively in a scene between she and Nolte’s character, which is strongly reminiscent of Bab’s breakdown over the phone to Redford in “Way We Were”), as well as Kate Nelligan as Tom Wingo’s mother in present day, as well as several flashbacks. All around this is an amazing film that tells a poignant story, which is timeless, and gives incredible performances throughout. Do not disregard this film simply due to backlash towards Streisand. She is a female performer and when she asks, or insists, on how she wants things done, people label that as difficult*. (Note that you won’t see that with:Martin ScorseseWarren BeattyOrson WellesBen AffleckGeorge Clooneyetc.)Needless to say, this Blu-ray is worth every penny. The picture quality, the sound quality, the special features, it’s all worth it. And the film is top notch. You won’t be disappointed.
