This book examines how simple, everyday things are unique and sacred. It explores the act of giving as the true route to receiving. One aspect of the book that I found especially profound is the origin of the word 'perfect'. The Latin root of 'perfect' implies completion. Common usage in English implies that perfection is 'without flaws'. Bender states that our usage is incorrect. She emphasizes that imperfection and flaws can make for the more beautiful and complete. She uses the analogy of the Zen Giving Bowl. One becomes complete by being open to others and experiences. Uniqueness and experience are our path toward completion.Bender uses other analogies to make her point that perfection is being complete rather than being without flaws. She points to Hopi and Asian pottery. The most beautiful pot is usually the one with a flaw. The 'flaw' is what makes it unique and complete. All the pots that are the same have nothing special to them.As a clinical social worker, I use this meaning of perfection with my clients. Too many of us think of ourselves as imperfect because we have flaws. Having flaws is what makes us unique and what completes us as human beings.I highly recommend this book for everyone.
